Graduation Is Just the Beginning: Your Next Steps After School Ends

Graduation season is an exciting milestone. Whether you’re finishing high school, completing an adult education program, or earning a certificate or degree from a community college, you’ve accomplished something important—and now it’s time for the next step.

For many students across Tulare County, that next step is entering the workforce. While that can feel exciting, it can also feel overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Step 1: Update Your Resume with Your New Skills

Even if you don’t have years of work experience, your education matters. Add:

  • Recent certifications or degrees
  • Relevant coursework
  • Volunteer work or internships
  • Leadership roles, clubs, or projects

💡 Example:
“Completed coursework in medical terminology, customer service, and Microsoft Office applications.”

If you attended an adult school or community college in Tulare County, highlight hands-on training and practical skills employers are looking for.

Step 2: Start Applying Early

Many employers begin hiring for summer and entry-level positions right around graduation season. Don’t wait until after graduation to begin your search.

Look for opportunities in:

  • Healthcare
  • Retail and customer service
  • Warehousing and logistics
  • Administrative support
  • Skilled trades

📍Employment Connection can help you search local job openings and connect with employers hiring now.

Step 3: Build Professional Connections

One of the best ways to find a job is through networking. Let teachers, classmates, family, and community members know you’re looking for work.

Attend:

  • Job fairs
  • Hiring events
  • EC workshops
  • Community networking opportunities

You never know who might connect you to your first opportunity.

Step 4: Practice Interviewing

Interviews can feel intimidating when you’re new to the workforce—but preparation builds confidence.

Practice talking about:

  • Your strengths
  • Your goals
  • What you learned in school or training
  • Why you’re excited to work

💡 Example:
“I recently completed an office technology program and I’m excited to apply my computer and customer service skills in a professional environment.”
