Starting your first job can be exciting—but also overwhelming. How do you know if it’s a “good” job? At youth@work, our goal is to set young people up for long-term success by helping them understand and aim for quality jobs from the very beginning of their careers.

What Does a Quality Job Look Like for Young Workers?

Here’s what we encourage young job seekers to look for:

• Clear opportunities for growth: Does the employer offer training or chances to move up?

• Reliable pay and hours: Are wages fair? Are work hours consistent?

• Safe and respectful work environments: Is the workplace inclusive and supportive? Do you feel safe?

• Supportive benefits: Even part-time jobs may offer paid time off or access to wellness programs.

• A voice at work: Are your ideas heard? Can you give feedback?
