Thinking About Going To Training This Spring? Start Planning Now
Have you been looking at job openings and thinking, “I could do that job if I had the right training”?
Spring may feel far away, but many schools and training providers will soon begin registration for spring classes. If learning a new skill or earning a certificate is part of your career goal, now is a good time to start exploring your options.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. A little research now can help you make a more informed decision later.
Start With the Job You Want
Before choosing a training program, think about where you want that training to take you.
Ask yourself:
- What type of work interests me?
- What skills do I already have?
- What skills or certifications do employers require for this job?
- Is this a career I can see myself doing for several years?
- Does the job fit the schedule and lifestyle I need?
For example, you may see a training program that sounds interesting. Before enrolling, look at job postings for that career. What qualifications are employers asking for? What does the work involve? What schedules are common?
This can help you decide whether the training fits your career goal.
Compare Training Programs
Once you have a career in mind, start researching programs that can help you build the skills you need.
Don’t choose a program based only on how quickly you can finish it. Ask questions such as:
- How long is the program?
- What will I learn?
- Will I earn a certificate, license, or other credential?
- What are the class days and times?
- Can I get to class consistently?
- What costs should I expect?
- What are the requirements to enroll?
Comparing your options can help you find a program that works for both your career goal and your life.
Think Beyond the Starting Pay
Pay is important, but a quality job can offer more than a paycheck.
As you explore careers, think about what matters to you. That might include steady hours, benefits, opportunities to move up, a safe workplace, or the chance to continue learning new skills.
A career that gives you room to grow may offer opportunities that you hadn't considered when you first started looking.
Find Out Whether Training Assistance May Be Available
The cost of training can be a challenge, but don't assume that means training is out of reach.
Employment Connection may be able to help eligible customers with scholarships for approved vocational training programs. Funding is not guaranteed, and eligibility requirements apply.
A good place to start is by reviewing the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL). You can log in to CalJOBS or visit the Employment Connection website to explore approved training providers and programs.
See a program that interests you? Write down the school, program name, and the career you're interested in. Then bring that information with you when you speak with Employment Connection.
Build a Plan With a Career Coach
You don't have to make this decision alone.
Employment Connection Career Coaches can help you explore career options, look at the skills you already have, identify skills you may need, and develop a plan for reaching your employment and training goals.
Spring will be here before you know it. Starting your research now gives you time to ask questions, compare programs, and make a decision that supports where you want to go.
